Studying the health status and hearing ability of workers exposed to organic solvents (toluene, xylene…) in some enterprises and solutions to protect workers health

Code : 200/03/TLD
Duration : 2000 – 2004
Author : Hoang Thi Minh Hien, PhD

OBJECTIVES:
– Evaluating health and hearing ability of workers exposed to organic solvents. (toluene, xylem…).
– Suggesting solutions for workers health protection.

ACTIVITIES:
– Evaluating pollution situation of working environment, Surveying technological process in selected areas; measuring organic solvents pollution and noise in these areas
– Evaluating workers health: interviewing workers on symptom, checking health, measuring hearing ability and audio-visual reflection time.
– Evalutating the impact of organic solvents on hearing ability of workers.

– Suggesting solutions for workers health protection

RESULTS:
– The study of technological processes of 04 companies that use the organic solvents in Hanoi, Vinh Phuc and Hung Yen provinces evaluates the pollution situation of working environment. It shows that: the organic solvents exceed standards from 1.3 to 1.5 times, the noise over from 2-7 dBA; the temperature over from 2-5oC. The health of workers who are exposed to organic sovents has the changes in neurologic, behavior, blood and longer audio-visual reflection time. The rate of hearing loss in workers was 16.3%. Organic solvents and noise are harmful occupational hazards, affecting the auditory organs, increaing occupational hearing problem.
– The research proposed some solutions to protect workers health such as: preparing the draft of “Standard recruits and regular health examinations for workers exposed to organic solvents”, designing glue bowl with a lid instead open. In addition, there ia suggestion of some exercises, positive and suitable resting between working hours.

APPLICATION:
Applicable for working places that have organic solvents in Vietnam.
